Identity Crisis–Do You Know Who You Are? S2E10

Quite often, people make the mistake of placing their identity in the wrong things. Now let’s look at some examples. First, there are those who find identity in the number of likes they get on social media. If the response is not what they expected, they take it as rejection. Second, let’s say an award-winning singer can no longer sing. Said singer then goes into a severe depression. Why? Because his identity was only in his voice.

And what about the pro football player who gets injured who can never play again. He then turns to alcohol because, for him, football was his life. Last, what about a multi-millionaire who loses all his money. He later commits suicide. Again why? Because he could not live without the power and authority that his money once afforded him.

In the examples mentioned earlier, each person found themselves in an identity crisis. So, the question and topic are Identity Crisis–Do You Know Who You Are? When looking at oneself–where do you place your identity?

Made in God’s image

Now let’s look at what the Holy Bible has to say about identity. Genesis 1:27 New King James Version says, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” In other words, as a reminder, God is showing us in His word that our true identity comes from Him.

Now, what caused this doubt of identity? Well, back to scripture we go where history unfolds. Genesis 3:1-7 New King James Version says,

1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.”

Specifically, we can see how the serpent caused Eve and Adam to question who God had made them to be. Even after spending intimate time with God Adam allowed the enemy to influence him and Eve. Again, the question and topic are Identity Crisis—Do You Know Who You Are?

Identity in Christ Jesus

Moreover, God had a way to fix the mistake Adam and Eve made.  We can see that in the following scriptures. In fact, 2 Corinthians 5:17-19 New King James Version says,

“17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.”

And Galatians 3:25-27 The Message says,

“But now you have arrived at your destination: By faith in Christ you are in direct relationship with God. Your baptism in Christ was not just washing you up for a fresh start. It also involved dressing you in an adult faith wardrobe—Christ’s life, the fulfillment of God’s original promise.”

Last, Philippians 4:12-13 The Passion Translation says,

“I know what it means to lack, and I know what it means to experience overwhelming abundance. For I’m trained in the secret of overcoming all things, whether in fullness or in hunger. And I find that the strength of Christ’s explosive power infuses me to conquer every difficulty.”

Furthermore, these scriptures remind me of where I get my true identity and strength. You see, when your identity is in Christ Jesus, He will equip you with the strength to face any obstacle. And also, to help you come out on the other side of it victorious.

God’s heart print

Equally important, through Jesus the love of God is imprinted on one’s heart because God is love. 1 John 4:7-9 English Standard Version reminds us as follows,

“7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”

I love how the song Heart Print in the video below shares the beauty of identity in Christ Jesus.
