But Who Do You Say I AM? — S2E16

To begin with, I pose this question. Have you ever wondered what people say about you when you’re not around? Generally speaking, most people have heard the saying, “I wish I could have been a fly on the wall.” Of course, only long enough to see and hear how people feel about you. So, who do people say you are? Are their perceptions of you formed from a personal relationship with you? Or are they formed based on the opinions of others whether true or false?

First-hand experience

Photo of a silhouette of a man posing as Jesus standing arms raised while looking at a sunset. Title of photo asks the question "But Who Do You Say I Am?"

In the Holy Bible, we find a perfect example of the question “But who do you say I Am?” Jesus asked His disciples that question.

Luke 9:20 New English Translation, reads like so,

“18 Once when Jesus was praying by himself, and his disciples were nearby, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 They answered, “John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others that one of the prophets of long ago has risen.” 20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

You see, the disciples walked with Jesus. Therefore, they had first-hand experience of His character.

The opinions of others

For instance, people with best friends would know if someone was misrepresenting them. Why would that be the case? Well, the opinions of others would not change what one knows to be true about a best-friend. Because most people are close enough with a best-friend to know his or her character. So, if someone was to say something false about their best-friend one would know if the statement was true or not.

Now of course there are exceptions to that, especially if the best friend is leading a double life. They show one face to their family and friends and another face to others. But that would never apply to Jesus. Because He was and is the Son of God, the second person of The Trinity, and the Savior of the world.

Try Jesus for yourself

Despite what some people think and say, Jesus is awesome. A true encounter with Him will change one’s life forever for the better. He is the perfect representation of God’s love for the world. John 3:16 The Passion Translation puts it like this, “For this is how much God loved the world—he gave his one and only, unique Son as a gift. So now everyone who believes in him will never perish but experience everlasting life.”

John 1:12-14 New Living Translation says, “12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”

Now no matter what you’ve heard about Jesus Christ, don’t just take the opinions of others. Moreover, please don’t judge Jesus by the negative behaviors of some Christians. I implore you to try Him for yourself.
